The other day, as I got my dogs rain coat on him, it dawned on me: “I am absolutely crazy.”
Not that me getting my dogs raincoat on was the first time I ever noticed it, but realizing your dog has a raincoat when you yourself do not, really gets you thinking. I would literally do anything for this chunky little dude who can’t even speak to me or understand me entirely. For all I know, he thinks I’ve completely lost it too (I’m actually positive he thinks that).
Here are some things I’ve learned since we welcomed our wrinkly little monster into the family.
Picking up another living beings poop will always be gross – Yeah, I could be one of those people who leave their dogs waste for others to step on, but I don’t have it in me. Each time he goes to the bathroom and it requires me to pick it up, I will be cringing and making noises with some light gagging. I’ve been laughed at by strangers because of it but it. never. gets. easier.
A queen bed can comfortably fit 2.5 – I’ve never been one of those people who don’t allow their dogs on the bed. I just can’t leave him downstairs or in a crate when we go to bed. Not that those people are awful, because they’re not at all, I just prefer to have him with us. My favorite is when he (briefly) wakes me up in the middle of the night just to get a little closer.
Dogs take a lot of time, energy & money – I’m really glad we didn’t get Guapo when we were younger. He’s so much fun but he requires a lot of our time, energy and not to mention – money! Its not cheap to maintain a healthy, happy dog. Daily walks have to happen even if I’m not in the mood. Good quality food needs to be purchased on a regular basis and there have been a few emergency vet visits which result in a pretty hefty bill.
Dogs have bodily functions like humans – Every burp, fart, booger, sneeze and cough is just like a humans. I was NOT ready for some of the gross things I’ve had to endure or some of the embarrassing “is this normal” conversations I’ve had to ask the vet. Dogs are very much so living, breathing things with bodies and functions. I’ve had to wake up in the middle of the night to tend to an infected ear. They can get sick, and major health concerns like humans. Dogs, especially Frenchies, are not for the faint of heart.
You really do miss them when you are away – wether we are out to dinner or away on vacation, we miss Guapo like crazy when we are away. We are always so grateful to be able to leave him with my parents who love him like a human grandchild, but, we always find ourselves wishing he was with us.
They are the best friend a girl could ever have – I knew I was going to love Guapo so much. I joke that I manifested him into our lives but anyone who knows me knows I really did! I swear he knows when I’m down and out and quietly stays near by. I never expected to love him as much as I do and every single day I hope he feels love from us. I am so grateful he’s ours!
