Coffee: A Thing of the Past

I used to be someone who NEEDED their cup of coffee every single morning. I wouldn’t truly feel “awake” until I was about half way through my cup. If I ever didn’t have a chance to make it myself in the morning or if I was running late and didn’t have time to stop and grab it, it wouldn’t be a pretty sight (but make no mistake I would choke down office coffee to get by).

I remember relying on coffee to feel good and associating coffee with why I felt like I could function. I would always wake up tired. Every morning I would say to my husband “I could sleep 9 more hours” and that was just my normal. I had accepted that I just wasn’t a morning person. I was never looking at why I was so lethargic in the first place.

It wasn’t until I started taking a look at the things I was putting into my body was I able to even consider not drinking coffee. I know coffee itself isn’t such a terrible thing, there are far worse things out there. Well, I wasn’t able to drink it unless I was putting things in it that weren’t good for me. I had a stint of drinking black coffee but it made me so anxious and jittery that it just wasn’t an option to drink it that way anymore.

Fast forward to my diagnosis and realizing I need to make a major change in my life and diet, coffee was the first thing I needed to part with. I have decided to cut out all dairy and added sugars so obviously the beginning of my days could no longer start with those ingredients. I switched up my whole morning routine and with it I gained so much.

First thing I did was switch to green tea:

Green tea does have caffeine so I figured this would be a good way to wean myself off of coffee and not feel sluggish/have headaches from withdrawals. Also, the health benefits of green tea are ammaazzinngg:

The next thing we started doing consistently was taking Wheat Grass shots first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach. I have mentioned wheat grass in “My Favorite Things” section but it is worth the mention again because I truly believe wheat grass is a main reason for my new thought clarity, my morning energy and mostly my clear skin!


It’s so easy to just mix in the wheat grass powder with however much water you want (I usually do less than half a glass so I can just shoot it). The taste is really mild and keeps a thin consistency so, to me, it’s just like taking a shot of water. Some of the health benefits of wheat grass powder are:

  • High in Nutrients and Antioxidants
  • May Reduce Cholesterol
  • Could Help Kill Cancer Cells
  • May Alleviate Inflammation

I am convinced that these two things have helped me leave coffee in the past. I have a whole morning routine that I will one day write about but these two components are so important and, I believe, are the biggest aids in helping me live coffee free.

I wake up now feeling refreshed and ready to hop out of bed with no grogginess (YES, no grogginess at all). My mind is so much clearer at work and I do not battle with fogged thinking. There are even days when I realize it is noon before I have had the chance to make my cup of tea! I am completely in awe of how good I feel every single day and it’s not attributed to coffee, its attributed to fueling my body properly and giving it the nourishment to thrive.

  1. One simple thing I have started to do is keep a glass of water by my bed so as soon as I wake up I can begin rehydrating. Starting my day with 8-12 oz. immediately also helps ensure I drink half my body weight in h2o each day!
